Beginner’s Guide To BDSM: The Safeword

For those of you wondering what the fuck a ‘safeword’ is, allow me to drop some knowledge on you before we continue. A safeword is loosely defined as a prearranged word established between a dominant and submissive sexual couple, that’s purpose is solely to serve as a signal to end an activity for any reason.

Prior to partaking in any activity that concerns BDSM, it is highly essential to establish a safeword. Since the fundamental piece of BDSM’s foundation is consent. A safeword will protect both parties and maintain that each party is safe, consenting, and enjoying what is occurring. Any activity without a safeword is not recommended nor practiced by BDSM enthusiasts.

When selecting your safeword, you and all parties involved should jointly decide what the word itself shall be. Almost as if choosing a password for your email, you want to make sure your safeword includes the important elements such as:

1. It’s easy for all parties involved to recall (your mom’s birthday, your cat’s favorite hiding spot, too easy to forget at the moment)

2. It’s not the source of mix up, meaning it won’t be mixed up or confused with another word  (ex.  “read” or “red”)

3. It’s not too long or hard to pronounce (i. e. supercalifragilisticexpialidocious)

Once you’ve factored in all those elements decide together what works for you.  I would also recommend finding a signal that would work in the event that speaking is not a possibility. Not only does a signal provide a second line of defense, but also enables you to be really, really, risque! If you can’t think of anything, get stumped, or all else fails, I’ve provided a list of some of my all-time favorites below. Enjoy and Happy Humping!
